When Kyocera and Verizon launched the Brigadier in July, they did so with plenty of spotlights on the “Sapphire Shield” feature they talked so much about. Now, just under a week after the phone’s official availability was announced, the manufacturer has decided to put the device in the torture test vice, all in a hope to show off what sapphire glass is all about. The effort to make our phones more durable, more rugged, without making them feel or look like rugged devices is still ongoing for many manufacturers, so finding materials to accomplish that is a big goal. Sapphire glass is one area where manufacturers, and consumers, could see a big boon for keeping scratches away from our device’s displays. But, it only counts for so much with words. It’s better to show it off.

Kyocera is here to oblige. The company has released a pretty straightforward video with the device front and center, and tightened into a physical vice. They run a piece of granite over the Sapphire Shield display, as well as a “regular” impact-resistant panel, and you can probably guess the results. If you want to see it in action, though, check out the video below. Do you hope more manufacturers start using this for their displays?
