Hideo Kojima gives another cryptic tease of Death Stranding and hints that new footage is on the way soon. While it seems like an eternity since fans last heard news on the mysterious action game, there could be a glimmer of hope on the horizon for those that have stuck around.
As Kojima’s first game since he split from Konami in 2015, Death Stranding continues to be one of the most anticipated video games in living memory. Even though the title was first announced at E3 2016, there is still no solid release date for Death Stranding. As players wait patiently, it seems like one fan couldn’t help but poke fun at the game’s extended release window.
When Kojima posted a shot of the Kojima Productions Editing suite, he showed off the game’s logo and a pretty convoluted timeline. People have already started digging deeper to try and decipher what the photo means. Someone posted a near-perfect response to Kojima and riffed off the recent release of Avengers: Endgame. Featuring the video game maestro in his own Endgame poster, the “Avenge the Fallen” tagline has been replaced by “Where’s the Game?”
Given that Kojima had already warned that Death Stranding was behind schedule, it’s no big surprise he hasn’t given an update on the release date. Whenever he confirms when Death Stranding will release, it’s sure to be big news and pile on the pressure to make it out on time. Whatever Kojima is working on, all signs point to a new trailer at E3 2019.
The acclaimed gaming director has compared Death Stranding to how his work on Metal Gear was genre-defining for its time. Elsewhere, Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts has already promised that Death Stranding will raise the bar when it comes to gaming, branding Kojima’s vision as a “miracle.” At least players know Death Stranding has an all-star cast. From that first tease of Guillermo del Toro’s likeness in 2016, the game has added the likes of Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, and Léa Seydoux. Reedus said that the footage seen so far doesn’t even begin to cover what the game is about, calling Death Stranding “a crazy complicated game.”
Remembering back to the first tease of Death Stranding, it’s still not much clearer what the game is actually about. Apart from focusing on Reedus’ Sam in a dystopian world full of horrific creatures and time-altering rain, everyone has been left to piece the puzzle together themselves. Hopefully, a new trailer will lift the veil on Death Stranding and finally give fans insight into what Kojima is up to.
